If one part suffers, all parts suffer with it...
"If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts rejoices with it." Taken from the BIBLE 1Corinthians 12:26
This is a very interesting article I read in "Streats" today
I feel left out in a right-handed world
By ELSTON SOARES
As a left-handed person, I learnt early in life that people do treat southpaws like us rather differently. I first realised this during a rehearsal for the annual school day function. I was six years old then. The rehearsal was for all the children in my class who were to receive prizes at the event. While others were being shown which way to approach the chief guest and how to leave the stage, I was also told that when I shake hands with the chief guest I should offer my right hand. That was only the start.
In art and craft class, I used to find it difficult to use a pair of scissors. So too learning to write and tying shoelaces, among other things. It was much later that I discovered there were scissors for left-handed people. My school years were punctuated by many episodes of being forced, both by my parents and teachers, to use my right hand to do everyday things – from writing to eating.
This, I guess, is because in many Asian cultures it is seen as impolite to use your left hand to eat, shake hands, or even receive gifts for what are claimed to be reasons of hygiene. It is known that in many Asian cultures, people use the left hand to clean themselves after visiting the loo. But it’s just a hand after all, and you can always wash it afterwards. Thankfully, my parents saw sense after trying for a while to make me conform to the ways of right-handed people. Before long, they let me be. But I do know of children who believe that their speech and sight were affected after their parents forced them to do things the right way.
Sadly, the discrimination that persists against us left-handers in various fields of human endeavour also finds an echo in the English language.
A left-handed compliment, for example, is not something you want to hear.
Incidentally, the word for “left” in French is “gauche”, which also means clumsy. In Latin it’s “sinister”.
I have yet to find out what’s so evil, or sinister, about being left-handed.
Contrast this with how right-handers are treated by the English language.
From the French word for “right”, which is “droit”, we get the English word “adroit”, which suggests capability.
The Latin for right is “dexter” from which we get such words as “dexterous”. Ambidextrous literally means “both right”.
Left-handedness, however, is not as rare or exotic as people think it is.
According to Lefthanders International, one in every 10 people is left-handed, and males are one and a half times more likely to be left-handed then females.
But many myths about left-handers persist. One is that lefties tend towards creative genius. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Ludwig von Beethoven, Benjamin Franklin, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein were all
left-handed according to history. But just as we can name all these talented left-handers, we can also list just as many right-handers.
There are no concrete facts to prove or disprove any relation between being left-handed and being exceptional in any field.
According to Ms Martha Pieper, co-author of Smart Love and columnist for the Chicago Parent, being left-handed means simply having a preference for using the left hand for a variety of tasks, including reaching, throwing, pointing and catching. As for why some of us are left-handed, medical researchers have looked long and hard for the reasons.
And their answer?
The same reason why brown-eyed people have brown eyes – genes that manifest their trait in one out of every 10 chances. But despite all the adjustments one has to make, the one thing about being a lefthander that gives me the greatest pleasure is when Ms Pieper says: “Being left-handed means having a dominant right side of the brain.” And often when a person is right brain dominant, they are thought of as dreamers, artists, and musicians. At least we have good taste.
Well... Hands are created by God after all...
And all that He had made were good...
